Diffraction warning. Stopping down past roughly f/11 on APS-C or f/16 on full frame buys depth of field and loses fine detail everywhere in the frame. The chart above ignores diffraction — it is pure geometry.

How it works

Hyperfocal distance is the focus distance whose far limit of depth of field lands exactly on infinity:

Read that last row again, because it is the whole argument for the technique. Focus at infinity and nothing closer than H is sharp. Focus at H instead and you keep infinity — while gaining everything down to H/2. Same lens, same aperture, one turn of the focus ring, twice the usable depth.

Using it in the field

1. Don't trust the barrel

Modern lenses focus internally and their distance scales are decorative. Instead of setting the ring to a number, look at your scene, find something roughly at the hyperfocal distance — a rock, a fencepost, a patch of grass — and focus on that.

2. Err far, not near

If you are unsure, focus slightly beyond the hyperfocal distance. Overshooting costs you a little foreground. Undershooting costs you the horizon, and a soft horizon is the one thing a viewer always notices.

3. Check it, don't assume it

Focus peaking makes the sharp zone visible: outline the near foreground and the far ridge at the same time and you are there. Magnified live view on the most distant detail works too. Both beat arithmetic done at the tripod.

The honest caveat

Hyperfocal focusing makes distant detail just barely acceptable by definition. If the horizon is the subject — a mountain ridge, a skyline — focus on it directly and accept a softer foreground. Hyperfocal is for scenes where the foreground is doing real work.

Common questions

What exactly is the hyperfocal distance?

The nearest distance you can focus at while infinity is still acceptably sharp. Focusing there produces the deepest possible total depth of field for that focal length and aperture: from half the hyperfocal distance to the horizon.

Should I use it for every landscape?

No. Use it when something close matters — rocks, flowers, a path leading in. When the nearest important thing is already far away, focus on the subject and enjoy the safety margin.

Why does a wide lens have such a short hyperfocal distance?

Because focal length is squared in the formula. Halving the focal length quarters the hyperfocal distance. A 16 mm lens on full frame at f/11 is hyperfocal at under a metre; a 100 mm lens at the same aperture is out past 30 metres.

Do I focus manually or can autofocus do it?

Autofocus can, as long as you aim it at an object at the right distance and then lock focus so it does not re-hunt when you recompose. A one-shot lock or manual focus both work; continuous autofocus does not.

Does stopping down further always help?

Up to a point. Every stop shrinks the hyperfocal distance, but past roughly f/11 to f/16 diffraction starts softening the entire frame — including the parts that were already sharp. Focus stacking beats f/22.
