The iPhone hardware supports manual focus; the stock Camera app doesn't expose it. Long-pressing gives you AE/AF Lock, which freezes what autofocus already chose — it doesn't let you choose.
A third-party camera app gives you a real focus control. Use focus peaking to judge it: sharp edges light up in colour, so you slide until the outline lands on your subject instead of squinting at the preview.
AE/AF Lock is not manual focus
Long-press the viewfinder in the stock app and you get a yellow AE/AF LOCK banner. Useful, and routinely mistaken for manual focus. Two problems:
- You still didn't choose the distance. It locks whatever autofocus landed on. If it locked onto the wrong thing, you've locked the wrong thing.
- It locks exposure too. The AE and the AF are welded together. Lock focus on a dark subject and your exposure is now pinned to that dark subject as well, even after you recompose towards a bright sky.
Real manual focus means setting the lens position — telling the lens where to sit, independent of what the camera thinks. iOS supports this on essentially every iPhone still getting updates. Apple just doesn't put it in the Camera app.
Worth knowing: separating focus from exposure is its own win. Some apps let you split the AE and AF targets so you can meter for the sky while focusing on a face — the phone equivalent of back-button focus.
When autofocus actually fails
Autofocus needs contrast to lock onto. Take away the contrast, or give it the wrong contrast, and it hunts:

The night-sky case is the clearest. No amount of tapping fixes it, because there is genuinely nothing in the frame with enough contrast at the focus distance the system is testing. Manual focus at infinity solves it in one move.
How to focus manually
The mechanics are the same in any manual camera app:

Switch focus out of auto
Usually a control marked AF / MF. Switching to MF locks the lens where it currently sits, so nothing jumps as you engage it.

Slide to set the distance
Phones focus by lens position, not by a distance scale, so the control runs from nearest to infinity rather than showing metres. Coarse at first — get roughly there.

Confirm with peaking or a loupe
Turn on focus peaking and watch which edges light up, or use a magnified view on the detail that has to be sharp. Do not trust the unmagnified preview.

Leave it alone
That's the payoff. Recompose, wait, shoot fifty frames — focus doesn't move until you move it.
Focus peaking, and why it matters
Judging sharpness on a phone screen is genuinely difficult. The display is small, bright, and high enough resolution that almost everything looks acceptably sharp until you get the file onto a real screen and discover the eyes were soft.
Focus peaking fixes this by not asking you to judge sharpness at all. It runs an edge-detection pass over the live preview — sharp detail produces strong local contrast, blurred detail doesn't — and paints the edges that pass the threshold in a bright colour. You stop evaluating the image and start looking for where the colour lands.
Don't aim for maximum peaking. Aim for peaking on the right thing. A portrait where the whole face glows is worse than one where only the eyelashes do — the second one is actually focused on the eyes.
The other aid is a magnified loupe: a temporary 100% view of one region while you set focus. Peaking tells you where focus landed across the frame; the loupe tells you how precisely. Most manual work uses peaking, and the loupe for the shots that have to be perfect.
The minimum focus distance problem
A frequent complaint that isn't a focus technique problem at all: you move in close, and the image simply will not come into focus. Tapping does nothing. Manual focus at the near end does nothing.
Every lens has a minimum focus distance, and on an iPhone Pro main camera it's around 200 mm — about eight inches. Closer than that and the lens physically cannot form a sharp image. Nothing in software fixes it.
The escape is the ultra-wide, which focuses far closer (roughly 20 mm) and is what "macro mode" actually is: the phone quietly switching cameras and cropping back to similar framing. Models with a close-focusing ultra-wide do this automatically. If yours doesn't, back off to about a hand's length, or switch to the ultra-wide yourself and move in.

Set it once and forget it
For street and landscape work there's an old trick that removes focus from the equation: set the lens to the hyperfocal distance — the nearest distance you can focus at while infinity is still acceptably sharp — and everything from about half that distance to the horizon falls inside the depth of field.
On a phone this is almost comically effective, because tiny sensors and short focal lengths produce enormous depth of field. An iPhone main camera at f/1.8 is hyperfocal at roughly a metre and a half, meaning one manual focus setting can hold everything from waist-distance to the horizon sharp. Set it, stop thinking about focus, and shoot.

Does the iPhone have manual focus?
